A decoction is a strong, concentrated liquid preparation used in herbalism to successfully extract the beneficial components from the toughest parts of plants, such as roots, barks, and seeds. Unlike a simple water infusion, which involves steeping, a decoction requires more rigorous preparation: the plant material is combined with water and actively simmered or gently boiled on a stovetop, typically for 20 to 30 minutes. This sustained, prolonged heat is essential to break down the hard, dense cell walls of the plant material, ensuring that the maximum amount of minerals, tannins, and other difficult-to-extract constituents are fully released into the water.
